Privy

Privy combines Shopify popups, email and SMS campaigns, marketing automation, segmentation and revenue reporting in one platform.

See on App Store

Privy is an ecommerce marketing platform that combines onsite displays, email, SMS and automated customer journeys. For a Shopify merchant, its main appeal is convenience: list growth, campaigns, segmentation and revenue reporting sit in one system, with store data flowing in automatically. It is best suited to teams that want a relatively approachable alternative to assembling several specialist tools, but the current pricing model needs more attention than the old free-plan positioning suggested.

Key features

  • Targeted onsite displays: Build popups, banners, flyouts, forms, landing pages, Spin-to-Win campaigns and multi-step quizzes. Targeting, exit intent and A/B testing help refine when and where a display appears.
  • Email campaigns: Create newsletters and promotions with templates and a drag-and-drop editor. The Email plan includes unlimited email sends, while segmentation and reporting help merchants target and assess campaigns.
  • SMS marketing: Collect SMS opt-ins, send scheduled or bulk texts, personalize messages and combine SMS with email. SMS usage is credit-based and requires toll-free number registration and approval.
  • Automated flows: Run welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, cross-sell, win-back, price-drop and back-in-stock journeys using email and SMS steps.
  • Shopify data and integrations: Privy syncs contacts, products, collections, cart values and order events for targeting, segmentation and reporting. It also connects with tools such as Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Gorgias, Recharge, Attentive, Postscript, Smile.io and Yotpo.

Pricing and trial information

Privy offers a 15-day free trial without requiring a credit card. Displays have no feature or traffic limit during the trial, but trial email sends are limited to 100 recipients per day. If no paid plan is selected when the trial ends, displays are deactivated and automated Flows stop.

The Pop Ups & Displays plan starts at $24 per month for up to 10,000 monthly pageviews. Email starts at $30 per month for up to 1,500 mailable contacts and includes unlimited email sends plus 250 SMS credits. The Shopify listing also shows Email and SMS from $45 per month for up to 1,500 email contacts and 1,250 SMS credits. Pricing rises with pageviews, the highest number of mailable contacts reached during a billing cycle, and additional SMS usage. External charges may be billed by Privy separately from the Shopify invoice.

Rating and reviews

Privy has a 4.5 out of 5 rating from 3,970 Shopify App Store reviews. Around 74% are five-star ratings and 4% are one-star ratings. Recent positive feedback repeatedly mentions responsive, knowledgeable support and an easy onboarding experience. Critical reviews focus mainly on unexpected or poorly understood recurring charges, especially after usage or contact counts changed, and on assuming that uninstalling the Shopify app also cancelled the Privy subscription.

Pitfalls

Budgeting is the main issue to examine. Email charges automatically scale according to the highest mailable-contact tier reached during the billing cycle, while the Displays plan scales with pageviews and SMS uses credits. Clean inactive contacts and model costs using real traffic and list sizes before migrating.

Uninstalling the Shopify app does not cancel the Privy subscription. The account must be cancelled separately, and cancelling mid-cycle removes paid features immediately. Contact deletions also do not replicate automatically between Shopify and Privy, so list hygiene needs an explicit process.

SMS is not ready immediately. A business must complete toll-free registration and approval before collecting textable contacts or sending texts. Email deliverability also requires a sending domain with suitable DMARC, SPF and DKIM records. Consent, privacy and messaging-law obligations remain the merchant's responsibility, so Privy's compliance tools should not be treated as legal advice.

Stores using a theme installed or changed after July 28, 2025 may need to enable or re-enable the Privy Theme Block in Shopify's theme editor. Merchants already using a full email or SMS platform should also check for duplicated forms, automations, data syncs and subscription costs.

Conclusion

Privy is a credible choice for a small or mid-sized Shopify team that wants popups, email and SMS in one approachable platform and values hands-on support. It is less compelling when an established email and SMS stack already covers the same workflows, or when contact and traffic-based price increases make costs difficult to predict. Use the trial with a representative list and traffic level, verify the theme block and test the most important flows before moving production campaigns.
