Dondy

Dondy runs WhatsApp cart recovery, campaigns, order updates and AI chat, with per-message fees on top of the monthly plan.

See on App Store

Dondy, listed in the Shopify App Store as Dondy: WhatsApp Marketing+Chat, is a WhatsApp platform for Shopify stores. It spans a floating chat button, abandoned-cart automations, bulk campaigns, order and cash-on-delivery confirmations, review requests and an AI agent that answers customers. Built by an Israeli team in Givatayim and launched in March 2023, it sits in the App Store's Abandoned cart and Chat categories. It does not carry the Built for Shopify badge.

Key Features

  • Abandoned cart recovery: Automated WhatsApp reminders with cart contents, timing rules and discount offers, sent through the official WhatsApp Business API.
  • Bulk marketing campaigns: Broadcasts to Shopify customer segments with opt-in and opt-out handling, plus a Klaviyo connection.
  • Order, shipping and COD flows: Order confirmations, fulfilment updates and cash-on-delivery verification, with Shopify Flow triggers for custom automations.
  • AI agent and shared inbox: An AI agent for sales and support questions with product recommendations, a multi-agent inbox on the top plan, and help with green tick verification.
  • Review collection: Post-purchase review requests through Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Trustoo and Google.
  • Chat widget: A customisable WhatsApp button with prefilled messages, business hours and placement rules, available on the free plan.

Pricing and Trial Information

There are four plans, each paid tier with a 7-day trial. Free adds the chat widget, unlimited conversations and 10 manual cart or order messages. Pro at $6.99 per month adds premium button designs, custom hours, reports and 500 manual messages. Power Automation at $79.99 per month is the first plan with its own WhatsApp API account, automated messages, bulk campaigns to Shopify segments and the Shopify inbox. Elite at $159.99 per month adds the AI agent, AI training, product recommendations, a multi-agent inbox and a VIP account manager. Annual billing saves 20% to 25%.

The subscription is only part of the bill, because template messages are charged per message and Dondy publishes its own rate table by market. Checked against Meta's current rate card, all 38 markets in that table come to exactly Meta's marketing rate plus 60%: $0.1376 instead of $0.086 for the Rest of Central and Eastern Europe region that covers Czechia and Slovakia, $0.2184 instead of $0.1365 for Germany, $0.1272 instead of $0.0795 for Italy, and $0.04 instead of $0.025 for North America. A 5,000-contact campaign to Czech customers therefore costs about $688 in message fees against $430 at Meta's rates, though Power Automation and Elite include 1,000 free one-click messages every 30 days.

Dondy's table gives one rate per market and does not split it by template category. Meta charges far less for utility templates than for marketing ones ($0.0212 against $0.086 in that same region), so it is worth asking which rate applies to order and shipping notifications before budgeting for them. From 1 October 2026 Meta also starts charging for service messages and for utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer service window, with 1,000 free service messages per business number each month, which raises the running cost of support-heavy setups.

Rating and Reviews

Dondy holds 4.9 out of 5 from 824 Shopify App Store reviews: 756 five-star, 36 four-star, 6 three-star, 4 two-star and 22 one-star. On Trustpilot it sits at 4.5 from around 60 reviews. Support dominates the praise, frequently by name, with merchants describing video calls during onboarding and quick fixes afterwards, and several crediting the Shopify Flow integration with a large return on the subscription. Ease of setup and delivery speed come up repeatedly.

The 26 one and two-star reviews cluster around three themes. The first is WhatsApp number restrictions after bulk sends, including a July 2026 review describing daily blocks of six to seven hours for automated or bulk messaging. The second is billing: one merchant charged $719 upfront for an annual higher-tier plan instead of the cheap plan they intended, another charged $40 after uninstalling, and refunds taking over a month. The third is number portability, with a merchant unable to release their phone number for normal WhatsApp use after cancelling. A January 2026 three-star review simply finds the app expensive next to Wati.

Pitfalls

The free plan is not what most merchants mean by WhatsApp marketing. Free and Pro give you a chat button and manual one-click messages you send yourself; automated recovery and campaigns need Power Automation at $79.99 plus message fees, so the realistic entry cost is closer to $100 per month than to free.

The 60% markup is the central commercial question. It pays for the platform, the inbox, the flows and the API onboarding, which is the normal reseller model, but at volume it becomes the largest line on the invoice. A store sending 20,000 marketing messages a month to German customers pays about $4,368 through Dondy against $2,730 at Meta's list rates, a difference of roughly $1,638 a month that would fund a different setup. Compare it against providers that pass Meta's rates through and charge a flat platform fee.

Deliverability risk sits with your WhatsApp number rather than with the app. Meta restricts numbers that attract complaints, and campaigns to weakly consented lists are the quickest route to a limited or banned number. In the EU that consent has to be explicit and documented, and a WhatsApp opt-in is not covered by an existing email opt-in. Start small, keep marketing frequency low and watch the quality rating on your number.

Three smaller things: the app interface is available in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French but not German or Czech; the App Store listing and Dondy's own site disagree on several plan details, including the annual discount, the number of inbox agents and the starting message rates; and the app requests broad access, including sensitive customer data and edit rights on customers, products, orders, discounts, gift cards and your online store. Given how often billing appears in the negative reviews, screenshot the plan you pick and check the first invoice.

Conclusion

Dondy is a capable, well-supported WhatsApp platform, and in markets where WhatsApp is the default channel, cart recovery and COD confirmation through it can pay for themselves quickly. The 4.9 rating is earned mostly on support and ease of setup, and the feedback there is consistent enough to trust. What the rating does not price in is the message markup: at low volume it is a fair trade for a managed API account and a working inbox, and at high volume it is the reason to negotiate or to look at providers that bill Meta's rates directly. Work out your own cost per market first, keep the first campaigns small and properly consented, and use the 7-day trial to check the flows and the inbox against how your team already works.

Pros

  • Covers cart recovery, campaigns, order updates, reviews and AI chat in one app
  • Support is praised in the large majority of reviews, often by name
  • Free plan and a $6.99 tier for stores that only want a WhatsApp button
  • Official WhatsApp API onboarding, including green tick verification help
  • Shopify Flow, Klaviyo, Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo and Trustoo integrations

cons

  • Per-message rates are Meta's marketing rate plus 60% in every market
  • Automation starts at $79.99 per month, so the free plan is widget only
  • Repeated billing complaints: annual charges, charges after uninstall, slow refunds
  • Bulk sending to weakly consented lists risks WhatsApp number restrictions
  • Broad data access and no German or Czech app interface
